Regents Improvement 
After School Tutoring and Saturday Academy

Improving Regents exam scores through after-school tutoring and Saturday academies was an effective strategy to help students prepare for these important assessments. Here's how I implemented this approach:

1. Identify Targeted Students:

• To determine which students would benefit most from additional support I looked at data. These were students who have historically struggled with Regents exams, those who are at risk of not meeting passing scores, and those who have specific academic needs.

2. Offer After-School Tutoring:

• After-school tutoring sessions provided students with focused, one-on-one or small-group support in subjects covered by the Regents exams. The following was considered:

  • I enlisted qualified teachers or tutors (through Grandstreet) who are knowledgeable about the Regents exam subjects.

  • Regular Schedule: I set up a consistent schedule for tutoring sessions, ensuring they align with students' availability.

  • Structured Curriculum: I requested that teachers develop a curriculum that covers key exam topics and skills, with a focus on practice tests and sample questions.

  • Individualized Attention: Tutoring was tailored to individual students' needs, addressing their specific strengths and weaknesses.

3. Implement Saturday Academy:

• The Saturday academies provided extended learning opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of Regents exam subjects. 

• Subject Variety: I offered a range of subjects to cater to different students' needs and exam requirements.

  • Engaging Activities: Teachers designed interactive and engaging lessons that go beyond traditional classroom instruction.

  • Hands-On Learning: Incorporate hands-on activities, practical exercises to reinforce learning,and experienced educators lead the Saturday academy sessions.

4. Monitor Progress:

• Students were regularly assessed through practice tests, quizzes, and other assessmentsThis data was used to identify areas where students need additional support.

5. Parent and Guardian Involvement:

• Parents and guardians were kept  informed about the after-school tutoring and Saturday academy programs. Encourage their involvement and provide resources for them to support their children's learning at home.

6. Resources and Materials:

• Students were provided with access to study materials, resources, and practice exams. Ensure that they have the tools they need to prepare effectively.

7. Evaluation and Adjustment:

• I continuously assessed the effectiveness of the after-school and Saturday programs, and collected feedback from students, parents, and tutors to make necessary adjustments.

8. Celebrate Achievements:

• Recognize and celebrate students' improvements and successes. Positive reinforcement can boost motivation and confidence. Students were awarded with prizes for their attendance and progress.

9. Long-Term Planning:

• For this school year I will consider making after-school tutoring and Saturday academies an ongoing part of your school's academic support system, not just a short-term solution.

By implementing a well-structured and supportive after-school tutoring and Saturday academy program, I helped students prepare more effectively for Regents exams, ultimately improving their scores and academic outcomes.
